2024 is coming to a close, and you know what that means—it’s time to ask ourselves the big questions: What are my resolutions? What do I want to improve on? What are my goals for health, finances, and personal growth?
I’m a big fan of New Year’s resolutions. There’s something magical about celebrating the start of a new year and envisioning yourself becoming that next-level version of you. But let’s be honest—most people lose momentum after a few weeks. You start strong, and then suddenly, you’re on the couch, mindlessly scrolling, wondering where all that January motivation went.
This realization hit me while I was finishing my vision board for 2025. I was buzzing with excitement, fully imagining my dream life. My dad—who’s not the resolutions type—was sitting next to me, so I asked, “Don’t you have any plans for the new year?” His response stopped me in my tracks:
“I’ve stopped setting a boundary between the years. Anything I could do on January 1, I could just start now.”
It clicked. The real difference between planning and doing is in the timing. There’s nothing wrong with setting goals—it’s half the battle! But the other half? It’s about taking action, no matter when.
Taking Action is Timeless
There are only a few weeks left before 2025 begins, so why not start now? Let’s be real: you’re not going to transform your life overnight. Breaking 20-year-old habits and building 50 new ones in a day? Nah, not happening.
So here’s a thought: pick one or two goals you really want to work on. Think about the habits you’ll need to break or form to get there. Then, just start.
Yes, it’s a baby step—but small steps lead to big wins. Instead of chasing some extreme, all-or-nothing overhaul, focus on creating habits that stick. Imagine entering 2025 already ahead of the game, with the confidence that comes from knowing you’re in motion. Now is always the best time to start, and when you embrace that mindset, you won’t wait for the “perfect” moment—you’ll create it.
Why New Year’s Still Feels Special
Let’s not dismiss New Year’s entirely, though. There’s a reason it feels so significant. Looking back on the past few years, I’ve noticed how each year has its own unique story. Each one taught me lessons, shaped my goals, and brought me closer to understanding who I really am.
There’s also the power of numbers—deadlines, milestones, and fresh starts help us measure progress and give structure to our dreams. When you set goals, assign yourself a timeline to reflect. What worked? What didn’t? What can I do better? This cycle of action and reflection creates steady growth: take action, learn from it, and adjust.
One thing to remember: don’t strive for perfection. Life happens, and plans change—that’s okay. Reflection isn’t about criticizing yourself; it’s about learning what works for you.
Done right, New Year’s resolutions can be a powerful tool. You’ve got your vision board, your goals for health, finances, and personal growth—now it’s time to break them down:
- Goal: Be in your best shape by the end of the year.
- Problem: Binge eating.
- Root Cause: Low blood sugar.
- Why? Lack of sleep.
There it is: fix your sleep first. Build a consistent nighttime routine for January. By the end of the month, reflect on your progress and move to the next step. One small change can create ripple effects, connecting your goals in ways you didn’t expect.
How to Prepare for the New Year
We’re not rushing headfirst into 2025 just yet. Here’s how to close out 2024 on a high note while laying the foundation for success:
1. Reflect Deeply: This step is essential. Don’t skip straight to setting new goals—first, reflect on the year that’s ending. What are you proud of? What habits or routines do you want to keep? What didn’t work out, and why? Write it all down to get clear on where you stand.
2. Set Specific Goals: Now that you’ve reflected, it’s time to set clear, actionable goals. Focus on the how—what small, daily habits will help you achieve the bigger picture?
3. Visualize Your Future Self: Whether it’s writing a letter to your future self, designing a vision board, or meditating on your goals, find a way to connect emotionally with what you want to achieve.
4. Start Now: Why wait until January 1? Start embodying the version of yourself you want to become today. Take action, no matter how small, and step into your dream life as if it’s already yours.
Planning and taking action are like PB&J—each is good on its own, but together, they’re unstoppable. Plan ahead to know where you’re going, but start taking small steps now to get there. 2025 doesn’t need to be a “new you”—it just needs to be more of you, with a little extra sparkle and a lot more action.
